BIOGRAPHY

Amalia Mourad was born (1992) and raised in Berkeley, California. Her mother is from Egypt and her father is of Polish descent. She has spent much of her life traveling, including studying abroad in both Spain and Brazil. Amalia studied classical guitar for over 11 years, has written and studied poetry, performed spoken word, as well as performed in several professional plays. While developing herself through all of these forms of artistic expression she has also consistently practiced painting, which has been an integral part of her life. She primarily focuses on the figure, issues of gender, emotion, and the human experience. In 2013, Amalia graduated with a painting major from the College of Creative Studies (“a graduate school for undergraduates”) UCSB. She graduated with an MFA Fine Arts degree from the School of Visual Arts, NY in May, 2016.

Amalia Mourad was announced one of two Noteworthy artists for the New American Paintings Pacific Coast issue 121. She was represented at PULSE Art Fair New York in 2016. Her recent exhibitions include the SVA thesis show Popular Culture Is Where the Pedagogy Is: Explorations of Provocation and Praxis at The Hole, two group shows Play Me a Game, at the New School, and So Hot Right Now, at the SVA Chelsea Gallery. She is part of the collection “Girls Club: contemporary art by women.” She has also shown at Cloying Parlor in Brooklyn, NY (2014) the “Flight Deck” in Oakland, CA (2014), Sullivan Goss Gallery in Santa Barbara, CA (2013), UCSB CCS Gallery (2011-2013), and USF School of Law (2010).
